How to Build a Junk Journal Page Quickly (Without Overthinking It)
Have you ever sat down to journal, looked at a blank page… and suddenly had no idea where to start?
You’re not alone.
One of the most common reasons people get stuck with junk journaling isn’t lack of creativity - it’s having too many choices. Papers, embellishments, stamps, scraps, tags, florals, cards, textures…
When everything is lovely, it can be surprisingly hard to begin. That’s why I love using simple creative formulas that remove the overwhelm and help you start fast.
Today I’m sharing one of my favourites.
The 3-Layer Page Method
If you want to build a beautiful journal page quickly, try working in just three layers.
Layer 1 - Background Paper
Start with your foundation. Choose one paper to cover the page or act as your main backdrop.
This could be:
Vintage paper
Floral printable
Tea-stained page
Ledger paper
Textured neutral paper
Book page or music sheet
Don’t overthink it. Pick something that feels good and begin there.
Layer 2 — Feature Element
Now add one main focal point. This is the piece your eye is naturally drawn to first.
Ideas include:
A journal card
Vintage photograph
Quote card
Botanical image
Postcard
Label cluster
Portrait
One strong feature piece can instantly make a page feel intentional.
Layer 3 — Finishing Details
Now bring in the little touches that create charm and personality.
Think:
Labels
Tickets
Postage stamps
Florals
Lace
Tabs
Tiny words or phrases
Stitches or doodles
These details help tie everything together.
Why This Method Works So Well
The beauty of the 3-Layer Page Method is that it keeps things simple. Instead of wondering where every piece should go, you’re following a gentle structure: Foundation → Focus → Finishing Touches.
It helps you:
Start faster
Feel less overwhelmed
Use your supplies more easily
Create balanced pages
Build confidence as a beginner
And often, three layers are all you need.
Once You Feel Comfortable…
When this becomes second nature, you can add:
More textures
Extra clusters
Hidden journaling spots
Pockets and tuck spots
Fabric or ribbon
Distressing and inking
But starting simple makes the whole process feel lighter and more enjoyable.
A Gentle Reminder
You do not need to fill every inch of the page. You do not need twenty embellishments. You do not need to make it complicated for it to be beautiful. Sometimes a background, one lovely focal piece, and a few thoughtful details create the most charming pages of all.
Ready to Try It?
Next time you feel stuck, remember:
The 3-Layer Page Method
Background paper
Feature element
Finishing details
That’s it. Simple. Creative. Beautiful.
